Previously known as Biodiversity Action Plan Species (BAP) and still often referred to by this name, they include many species. Some of which are well known: hedgehogs, harvest mice and Tiger Moth.

There are also many lesser-known species, and whilst not afforded the same degree of legal protection as European Protected Species or Schedule 5 Species, their presence must be considered by the LPA.

“Species of principal importance for the purpose of conserving biodiversity” are included within section 41 (England) of the NERC Act (2006) and therefore need to be taken into consideration by a public body when performing any of its functions

We include an overview of these species in our EcIA, but occasionally the LPA will request a specific survey for a flagship species such as Harvest Mouse or Stag Beetle.
